.::THE FILM::.

Where have you gone, Michael Myers? As many flaws the Austin Powers series had, all three still managed to make me laugh and NOT make me want to run outside screaming that the end is nigh! How bad is The Love Guru? Let me put it this way, lock in the Israeli and Palestinian Prime Ministers and a peace plan would be hashed out in a matter of minutes. I remember all the outrage of how offensive this film was on the Indian culture; I say this was offensive to the entire human race. Yes, it’s THAT awful.

Mike Myers indulges/hams it up as The Guru Pitka, the world’s number two self-help guru. Wanting to appear on Oprah where he could once and for all be number one, he agrees to help a struggling hockey team whose star player, Darren Roaoke (Malco), had recently left his wife (Goode) and now Darren can’t play worth s***. Guru Pitka will not only get to appear on Oprah but will also get a check for $2 million if he can get the couple back together. To make matter worse, wifey went into the arms of Jacques Grande (Timberlake), goalie for Darren’s opponent and someone who as the nickname, “Le Coq” because he has a big penis (how frickin funny).

Can the Guru get them back together in time for Darren to help is team win the Stanley Cup? Will the Guru win the affects of Jessica Alba? Does anyone give a rat’s ass?

I find no hesitation in calling this one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It’s worse than Batman & Robin, even worse than Nicholas Cage's The Wicker Man which, in its own unintentional way, was actually 1,000,000 times funnier. From the opening music sequence -- in which Mike Myers sings a Bollywoodized version of “9 to 5” -- to the very end, The Love Guru failed to elicit one laugh for its grueling 80-minute running time.

So, again, where has Mike Myers gone? I realize it takes a certain personality to do comedy and Myers’ has a bad reputation, but my lord did no one stop him and say this was complete garbage? Did no one at Paramount bother reading the script before forking over the (reportedly) $60m+ budget? Also, Jessica Alba has been in some stinkers throughout her overrated career, but I have to think the actress who was ashamed to be a part of Good Luck Chuck couldn’t be proud of her work here...

The Love Guru is basically just an unfunny version of the Austin Powers movies. Change a few names for some pun humor (like the character, Tugginmypudha, played by Ben “Have You No Shame” Kingsley) and add in some midget jokes and wa la, comedy coal. This film has no flow, no momentum and no comedic timing whatsoever and it’s nothing short of a miracle that the American public saw through Myers’ BS and skipped it.

Please do not underestimate how much I hated The Love Guru. This is a film that makes those lame spoof movies look like some of the best comedy ever made. While Myers still has a ways to going down to Friedberg/Seltzer’s level, one more of these and the fall won’t be so far. Guess it’s time for him to do a few more Shrek movies...

Mike Myers and The Love Guru (9:36) – There’s nothing worse than watching the making of one of the worst movies you have ever seen. Thankfully this runs under 10-minutes.

One Hella Elephant (5:43) – Believe it or not, they actually made the upper half of a mechanical elephant for use in certain scenes. Aren’t there kids starving in Finland or something?

Hockey Training for Actors (8:02) – I find it funny that this featurette opens up with Mike Myers stating it would be embarrassing for an actor appearing in the movie looking like they couldn’t play hockey. That’s what you think is embarrassing?

We also get 11 Deleted and Extended Scenes (13:38) that is a bunch of stuff so bad, even it had to be cut; some bloopers (3:49), Back in the Booth with Trent and Jay (5:08) and Outtakes & More (10:13). Wonderful we get so much more footage...

And finally there is the theatrical trailer and a digital copy for those glutton for punishment and actually want to view this film on their iPod.

The Love Guru is presented in anamorphic widescreen with a 2.35 AR. The picture looks good and noticed no dust, scratches or other marks. Perhaps the only good thing on this DVD.

A Dolby Digital 5.1 is used to spew all the ridiculous and unfunny puns and dialogue. French and Spanish DD5.1 tracks are also available.

Make no mistake, I’m a sucker for juvenile jokes and I even enjoyed all three Austin Powers movies, but The Love Guru is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I have a hard time believing that 1. Mike Myers spent so much time “refining” the character and 2. he actually had a hand in writing it. Myers may not be a comedic genius, but I expected so much more from him than this drivel.
