.::THE FILM::.

“Scare Tactics” is basically an f***ed up version of “Candid Camera”, but with even dumber people. The series originally began airing in 2003 before going on hiatus in 2006 and revival in mid-2008 with “Saturday Night Live” alum Tracy Morgan serving as host (Shannon Doherty hosted from 2003-04 and Stephen Baldwin took over from 2004-05).

This Season 3, Part One DVD set contains 13 episodes but with season 4 set to return soon, not sure what the whole part one comes into play... In any case, each episode contains four pranks, some that work, others not so much.

Although the show does go to the extremes in scaring the sh** out of its victims (and the reasoning by friends or family can be lame, even getting somebody because they’re a nice person), I have to admit that I do enjoy it, up to a certain point. It’s not that I feel sorry for any of them nor is it an issue of putting these people through hell, but “Scare Tactics” kind of gets old after a while. One plus for the show is the pranksters they use on a regular basis including their resident psycho man (Chris Symonds, I believe who it is) and Jim Wilkey as the set-up guy.

There are four segments (Blood Bath, Death Bed and Breakfast, Pool of Blood, Blood Bath 2) that have a “Flesh Flash” with extra (nudity-laced) footage.

Here is a rundown of what is in this set:

01. Satan’s Baby
02. 3:10 to Hell
03. Deadly Genie in a Beer Bottle
04. Psycho in a Box
05. When White Nose Attacks
06. The Screaming Room
07. Frankenstein’s Basement of Terror
08. Taxi Cab Carnage
09. Home Video Horror
10. When the Larvae Breaks
11. Big Scoop of Scary
12. Blood Bath
13. Satan’s Baby Returns!

.::SPECIAL FEATURES::.

Not much on this DVD just some Additional Scenes (4:55) which are gratuitous nudity outtakes from three segments and some Bloopers (3:23) of Tracy Morgan flubbling his lines or going off the cuff.

.::AUDIO & VIDEO::.

“Scare Tactics” is presented with a full frame (1.33) transfer and really, what more should one expect from a television series like this. Everything looks on par from what I remember as it aired on SyFy.

Equally less important is the Dolby Mono (although my display says it was 2 channels), which is OK but you’re not going to get some phenomenal experience. Everything is fairly flat but I could still understand dialogue.

.::OVERALL::.

“Scare Tactics” is a show can be very mean but very funny... the first time around, beyond that it is mildly amusing but like many other “Candid Camera”-like shows, the replay value isn’t very high. If you haven’t seen many of these episodes before and can nab the set at $10 or under, then it might be worth it.
