.::THE FILM::.

So normally when I hear a title like The Underneath, I assume that itís going to have to do something with a lake and someone drowning. Well I was about half right, which seems to be my going rate. Being right fifty-percent of the time works one-hundred-percent of the time.

Piotr and his wife Iza decide to head to a lake cabin to visit Izaís former boyfriend Michael for the weekend. Piotr is a writer who has had a string of bad luck as heís nowhere near as successful as he wants to be but Iza stands by him. First off, who goes with their wife to go on vacation with her ex-boyfriend? Thatís a recipe for trouble if I ever heard one.

After they arrive at the location Piotr spots Michaelís new girlfriend, Ania, and after that he wants her more and more. For one reason or another Ania chooses to sunbathe nude constantly throughout the movie, and at one point Piotr spies on her while she changes. He wants her badly, but canít, mainly because heís married but that doesnít stop him from later on making out with her and later more things.

That is essentially the plot in a nutshell. I say essentially because the film is less than eighty minutes long, and it takes forever for anything to happen. There are a few weird things that happen in the movie such as a lake drowning that never really goes anywhere, and the ending is rather unsatisfying. Thereís also a rather uncomfortable scene involving Piotr and Ania that I found to be rather vulgar and dissatisfying to watch.

The acting is rather sub-par, and felt more like a high school drama club play rather than a film. The characters are too square. How can Iza not notice that her husband is continually lusting over Ania or why in the world would Piotr want to go anywhere with an ex-boyfriend of Iza? There are too many little things that add up to a bigger plot hole.

The only extras that can be found on the disc are a still gallery that features photos from the movie and the flickís trailer.

Even though most of the film takes place near a lake, you wouldnít be able to notice it due to the horrible picture quality that takes place throughout. Grain is in nearly every scene, and the contrast is heavily off in most of it as well. Some scenes are far too dark, even though itís clearly day time. Flesh tones are also too dark for some of the cast as well.

Itís hard to judge the audio side of the movie, since I canít understand what they were saying. But I can accurately say that my sub was turned on no more than twice the entire film. Dialogue was rather low the entire time in terms of levels, and at times background noise managed to drown it out. This is also a 2.0 Dolby Digital track I might add.

Thereís not really much else to say about The Underneath. As a movie it doesnít fit the bill because of its short length, there are no extras to be had, and the technical side is fairly lacking. I canít recommend it even for a rental due to non-existent English audio option, as subtitles are only available. Unless youíre a fan of reading movies, itís best to pass.
